William Sackett, gas works foreman, son of Richard Henry Sackett and Sarah Ann Kemp, was born in Deal, KentG, in 18471,2 and died aged 71 in Canterbury, KentG, in 1918.3 He married at St Mildred, Canterbury, KentG, on 27 July 1867, Rachel Link.4,5 Rachel was born in Chartham, KentG, in about 18436 and died aged 81 in CanterburyG in 1924.7
     In 1871 William was living at 4 Gas Row, CanterburyG, and was recorded in the census as William Sackett, an agricultural labourer, head of household, married, aged 26, and born in Deal. Living with him were his wife Rachel, aged 26, and born in Chartham, Kent, and their children, William, 7, Mary Ann, 4, and Louisa, aged two.8
     In 1881 he was living at 8 Artillery Street, Canterbury, KentG, and was recorded as William Sackett, gas works labourer, head of household, married, aged 40 and born in Deal. Living with him were his wife Rachel, 40, and their children, William, 18, Mary, 13, Louisa, 11, Olive, 9, Ernest, 6, Percy, 4, Jessie, 2, and Bertie, aged one month.9
     In 1891 he was living at 8 Artillery Street, CanterburyG, and was recorded as William Sackett, an engine driver at the gas works, head of household, married, aged 47, and born in Deal. Living with him were his wife Rachel, aged 48, and born in Chartham, and their children, William, 28, Olive, 19, Ernest, 16, Percy, 14, Jessie, 12, and Bertie, aged ten.10
     In 1901 he was living at 3 Ivy Place, CanterburyG, and was recorded as William Sackett, an engine driver at a gas works, head of household, married, aged 56. Living with him were his wife Rachel, 58, their unmarried sons, Percy, 24, and Herbert, 20, and their grandson George Sackett (Louisa's son), aged seven.11
     In 1911 he was living at 17 Meadow Cottages, Wincheap Grove, CanterburyG, and was recorded as William Sackett, stage foreman in the gas works, head of household, aged 65 and born in Deal. Living with him were his wife Rachel, 71, their unmarried son William, 48, and their grandson George Sackett, 18.12
     In 1921 William's widow Rachel was living at 29 Wincheap Grove, CanterburyG, and was recorded in the census as Rachel Sackett, head of household, a widow, aged 78. Her son William, 58, was living with her.13
